OUR STORY
Why we built JustDocz
JustDocz started with a very simple problem at home: decades of legal documents that existed, mattered, and could not be found.
From the founder of JustDocz · India
It started at home
My father is an advocate in India. Over the years his work accumulated across multiple computers, hard drives, folders and office systems — legal documents, client files, court papers, scanned records, correspondence and supporting material collected over decades.
Legal proceedings can continue for years, sometimes much longer. A document that seemed unimportant at one point may suddenly become relevant again years later.
The problem was finding it.
Remembering a document is not the same as knowing where it is
Sometimes he would remember the client’s name. Sometimes the type of case. Sometimes the court, a property, a party involved, or simply a few words from the document itself.
But remembering something about a document and remembering exactly where it was saved are very different things.
We occasionally got lucky with Windows Search. Most of the time, searching through years of folders was slow and frustrating. If the filename did not happen to contain the words we remembered, the document was effectively hidden.
Then documents stopped arriving as documents
The problem grew worse as the way people exchange documents changed.
More and more documents began arriving as scanned PDFs, as photographs sent through WhatsApp, or as attachments buried inside long email threads. A photograph of a legal notice may carry critical information, but to a traditional file search it is just an image. The same is true of most scanned documents.
The information was there. It simply wasn’t searchable.
So finding anything meant opening folders one by one, checking files manually, going back through old email, looking through WhatsApp downloads, and trying to reconstruct where something might have been saved. It cost time and energy, and it was avoidable.
The goal we started with
That is why we built JustDocz. The original goal was narrow and specific:
Make the documents already sitting on your computer searchable by what is inside them — not just by their filenames.
Everything since has been the same problem teaching us what the product still needed to do.
What the problem taught us to build
- OCR
- Scanned PDFs and photographed documents hold real information. Without OCR, a search tool sees only an image.
- Multilingual support
- Document collections in India are rarely limited to one language. A search tool that reads only English reads only part of the archive.
- Spelling tolerance
- People do not always remember an exact name or spelling years later, so JustDocz suggests corrections when a query comes close without matching.
- Semantic search
- Sometimes you remember what a document was about rather than the words it used. Searching by meaning covers what exact-word search cannot.
- Email archives
- A growing share of important information is buried inside email conversations and their attachments rather than filed neatly in folders.
- Local AI
- Document intelligence is useful. Sending private documents to a cloud AI service to get it is not, so JustDocz can work with AI models installed on your own computer.
Why privacy was not added later
There was another reason this problem could not simply be solved by uploading everything to an online search or AI service: confidentiality.
An advocate’s computer can hold years of privileged and confidential client information — legal opinions, agreements, financial records, property documents, correspondence, evidence and material connected to ongoing disputes.
With information like that, privacy cannot be treated as an assumption. You cannot take a chance with confidential client documents simply because uploading them somewhere would make them easier to search.
That requirement shaped JustDocz from the beginning. Rather than asking people to move their documents into our cloud, JustDocz is built around the documents already on their own computer. Search indexing and document processing stay local, and the application carries no telemetry that would track what documents you have or what you search for.
Read the Privacy Policy for the specifics of what does and does not leave your computer.
The same concern reaches well beyond legal practice
Doctors and healthcare professionals work with sensitive medical information. Researchers may hold unpublished work, proprietary datasets or confidential source material. Accountants and financial professionals handle bank statements, tax records and financial documents. Businesses keep contracts, employee records, customer information, intellectual property and internal correspondence.
In every one of those settings the problem takes the same shape: people need better ways to search and understand their documents without surrendering control of those documents.
Your documents should become more useful without becoming less private.
What it became
What began as a way to help my father find documents from decades of legal work turned into a broader idea.
A person’s computer may hold years of knowledge, but that knowledge is only useful if they can find it when they need it.
JustDocz is our attempt to make that knowledge searchable again.
Try it on your own documents
The honest way to judge whether this solves your version of the problem is to point JustDocz at your own folders. Every download begins with a 14-day trial of the full product — no account, no credit card.
